Boatmen demand to lift ban on boating in Ganga
VARANASI: After 11 days of imposing of ban on boat operations in Ganga by the district administration due to rise in water level, the boatmen have launched an agitation to withdraw the ban. They said that they are facing difficulties in the absence of alternate source of income.
The boatmen from 84 ghats along the Ganga gathered at Dashaswamedh Ghat and started indefinite sit-in under the banner of Maa Ganga Nishadraj Seva Samiti, UP. President of the samiti Vinod Kumar Nishad said that they had staged a sit-in in front of the river police post at Dashaswamedh on Friday and demanded the district administration to hold talks with them to provide solution to the problems being faced by them and their families.
Addressing the meeting, general secretary Pramod Majhi and another leader Kaladhar Sahani said that the level of Ganga had not reached close to warning mark so far and they had been trying to contact the officials to review the decision of banning boat operation for past many days. They alleged that officials paid no heed to their request.
